A cannabis dealer was caught carrying £2,000 of foul smelling skunk cannabis when a police officer sniffed out his stash during a routine stop.
Sean Thomas had just bought the bulk supply of the drug and was planning to sell some of it to friends until it was seized by the police.
Officers also found 200 Valium tablets hidden behind a picture in his North Devon home and recovered £2,265 cash.
Thomas, aged 23, of Old Bideford Road, Barnstaple, admitted possession of cannabis and valium with intent to supply and was jailed for ten weeks, suspended for a year by Recorder Mr Andrew Maitland at Exeter Crown Court.
The Recorder also ordered the seizure of the drugs and money and sentenced Thomas to carry out 200 hours unpaid community work and pay £440 costs.
He told him:"You purchased a quantity of skunk cannabis, which is the strongest form of the drug, and its smell gave you away. You had just spent £1,000 on it which must have come from previous sales.
"I accept your basis of plea in which you say you intended to sell only two out of the seven one ounce bags which were found. You were also involved in supplying valium.
"The offences are aggravated by there being two different sorts of drugs involved."
Mr David Bowen, prosecuting, said Thomas was the passenger in a car which was stopped by police in Sticklepath Hill, Barnstaple on October 18 last year.
He said:"It was a routine stop and the officer smelled cannabis in the car. The defendant was in possession of a rucksack in which there were seven plastic bags containing 196.68 grams of cannabis.
"He was also found with £1,800 in two bundles of bank notes and a further £465 was found at his home. A package with 200 valium tablets was found behind a picture.
"His phone showed messages incoming and outgoing which contained drug references which appeared to be asking about supply."
Mr Richard Crabb, defending, said Thomas had been a very heavy user of cannabis at the time and was smoking up to two grams a day.
He said most of the drugs were intended for his own use but he shared some with his partner and friends. He said he is now working but is keen to do unpaid work in the community.
