A MAN ended up in the River Exe and had to be rescued by police following an attack on Exe Bridges.
Police in Exeter are now appealing for witnesses and information after the incident at around 1am on Sunday.
The victim was walking near the Pizza Hut at Exe Bridges and as he approached the bridge he passed a group of people. An unknown offender then kicked him in the back.
The victim fell to the ground and was kicked again, before he was forced into the river.
A male attacker then continued to assault the victim in the water while a second man shouted verbal abuse from the riverbank while also throwing glass bottles at the victim.
As the victim attempted to climb out of the river, his hands were stamped on and he was kicked in the head by the attacker on the riverbank.
Police were called and rescued the victim from the river. He was taken to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital with bruising, but was later discharged.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident, and have been bailed. Witnesses should call police on 101.
