THREE friends have taken part in a triathlon as part of a family fundraising day.

The event raised funds for Honeylands Children's Centre, as well as Exeter Maternity Unit and the Neonatal Unit.

Charlie Palmer, whose son Tristan attends Honeylands, took part in a triathlon, a 750m swim, 20km cycle, and 5km run, with friends Anna and Gemma.

The trio finished at the Turf Locks pub, followed by live music throughout the day at the Turf Locks in Starcross on Saturday.

Tristan became seriously ill after his premature birth and suffered brain damage.

Charlie said: "To support Tristan's physical development we now attend a weekly group at Honeylands Children's Centre where he has physiotherapy, sensory stimulation sessions, music therapy and lots of fun.

"It has been an unbelievable journey for us with Tristan even before he was born and we would not be at this point if it had not been for the amazing support we have received along the way and ongoing.

"The money raised through sponsorship for myself, Anna and Gemma doing the triathlon, and on the day, will be divided between the Exeter Maternity Unit, the Neonatal Unit and Honeylands Children's Centre."

Honeylands Specialist Child Assessment Centre is an NHS service for young children with complex special needs in Pinhoe Road.

It offers a unique service to more than 90 children and families from the Exeter, East and Mid Devon areas. Staff bring a range of services for children and their families together on one site.

The League of Friends is a group of parents, friends and staff, who raise funds so that these special children and their families get the very best help and support.

It provides equipment and resources for children and families, helps to start new services as demanded by patients and staff and works with statutory bodies to secure mainstream funding as well as coordinating regular fundraising activities.
