SOUTH West Water has been ordered to put an end to the stench coming from its sewage works which is making people sick and stinking out the city.
The smell from the plant at Countess Wear has been causing problems across a large part of the city over recent weeks. And the water company has been criticised by Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw and leading councillors after scores of residents complained that their lives are being made a misery.
South West Water has apologised for the problem and claims it is investing in the plant to end the smell.
But the Environment Agency has revealed it is considering enforcement action against the company over the problem.
Marilyn Myers, from Countess Wear, who has two young children, said: "The smell is just unbearable and is making my children feel sick.
"People pay a lot of money to live in Exeter and this smell is quite widespread." Mr Bradshaw said: "Given SWW's huge profits and ever-increasing water bills it is intolerable people should have to suffer this stench for so long. I welcome the action being taken by the city council and the Environment Agency."
