NO sooner had Peter Sergeant decided to pack up driving when he discovered he'd won a brand new BMW.

Throw £100,000 in cash into the bargain, and it all adds up to being a pretty good week for the Exeter resident.

And if anyone deserves to win the People's Postcode Lottery, it's Peter.

The 69-year-old suffered a stroke a few years ago and part of his winnings will ensure that his life is a lot more comfortable from now on. He also plans the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii with his family.

The pensioner had been enjoying a coffee morning in his sheltered accommodation Crossley House in Denmark Road when he was surprised by People's Postcode Lottery presenter Scott Quinnell.

Peter, who has only been playing the People's Postcode Lottery since March this year, was delighted to find out that his postcode EX1 1SE had won him £100,000 and his dream car, BMW 1 series.

"It's absolutely wonderful news," said Peter. "I'm so, so happy."

He said he would now be able to join his family on an amazing holiday.

"My family have been planning a big trip to Hawaii next year," Peter said. "I didn't think I would be able to join them but this money means I'll easily be able to afford it."

Retired Peter said he was keen to help raise money for local charities and good causes including Bideford Bay Surf Life Saving, based in Exeter.

The project enables children to excel in the skill and sport of surf lifesaving. The charity is also celebrating as it has recently been awarded funding from the People's Postcode Lottery for the first time.

Along with the cash, Peter said he was proud of his new vehicle – even if he may not drive it himself.

"The car is the one I have wanted my whole life," he said.

"Unfortunately, as I'm approaching 70, I'll have to re-apply for my licence soon but even if I can't drive it myself, I'll make sure my son Darren can chauffeur me around."

People's Postcode Lottery ambassador Scott Quinnell said: "It was fantastic to present Peter with his prizes.

"He was so thrilled to have won and I know he has big plans for the money and is looking forward to cruising around in his shiny new BMW."
