WORK to build a one-off skate park in Mid Devon which should draw extreme sports fans from around the country is expected to start soon after the project won a grant of £80,000.
The money – from the Viridor credits Environmental Company – means the project is just £15,000 short of the £200,000 target.
The grants-giving company was already committed to spending £20,000 and Devon County Council and Mid Devon District Council have also put their hands in their pockets.
The proposal is for the current skate park in Bolham road, Tiverton, to be removed entirely and replaced.
The new park will be built by specialist company Maverick and should be one of the best in the region, including a concrete bowl.
Mid Devon District Councillor Kevin Wilson has been heavily involved in the project.
He is confident the remaining £15,000 can be found.
"This latest funding really wonderful news and means the park will be built soon," he said.
"I think Viridor was impressed with the way the committee behind the skate park was organised and could see how enthusiastic users were."
He said that when a new park was built, word got around the skateboarding and BMX community, and people from many miles around would travel to Tiverton to try out the new facility.
