THERE is still time to sign-up for the 17k Endurance Commando Challenge which takes in the same route Royal Marine recruits have to complete to be awarded their coveted green berets.
The event, now in its third year, will take place on Saturday, June 15, with runners setting off every two minutes from 9am.
Starting and finishing at the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre (CTC) Lympstone, runners will head up to the notorious course on Woodbury Common.
The recruits have to complete the gruelling mission within a time limit of 80 minutes.
Last year the run attracted around 600 people. And it raises a large amount of money for good causes.
In two years the event has raised a staggering £230,000 for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.
The event will contribute to the charity's fundraising target of £6m by the 350th birthday of the Royal Marines on October 28 next year.
But the event comes with a warning – in addition to an abundance of grit and determination, a keen sense of humour is also required.
Mud is a given as runners tackle a multi-terrain course including all the infamous obstacles of the endurance course, from the sheep dip and Peter's pool to the crocodile pit and the pitch-black tunnels.
Former Royal Marine of 23 years Alan Hardy, 63, decided to host the event in addition to the autumn 10k event which is in its 23nd year.
And he said tackling the infamous course remains as popular as ever.
He said: "The Endurance Challenge uses a totally authentic military training course which the Royal Marines use every day.
"Although testing, it is extremely rewarding when you consider it's the only time that civilians are allowed to undertake the complete course.
"We are very grateful to the Commandant of CTC for permission to use the course and for allowing us to raise funds for the Royal Marines Charity."
This year runners are travelling to East Devon from as far afield as Scotland, Wales and London.
Mr Hardy said the event offers an insight into the training programme for marines.
He said: "The event offers people the rare opportunity to have a crack at taking on one of the famous Royal Marines military training tests, which all recruits have to pass to achieve their green beret."
Hot showers, changing facilities, secure baggage, catering and licensed bar will all be available at the camp.
