Shocked Devon animal rescue workers are caring for a young dog that survived being tied in a sack and thrown into a river.
The four-month old pup, a German Shepherd cross, was one of four in the sack but the only one to survive.
The dog, named Toby by the staff at the K9 Focus rescue and rehoming charity, was rescued when a passer by managed to pull the sack out of the water.
Diane Johnson, of Broadclyst, K9 Focus co-ordinator, said: "Toby was brought to the rescue after he had been put in a sack with his three litter mates and thrown into a river.
"A passer-by managed to pull the sack out of the water and all but 2 pups were dead.   After a quick dash to the vet Toby survived but sadly his sister didn't make it - unbelievably he made a magic recovery from his ordeal."
Diane has now adopted Toby.
The charity is also caring for Cheyenne, who was found at a car boot sale in an emaciated condition.
Diane added: "Both of the puppies stories are horrific and I am so glad our charity could take them on and can now find these gorgeous dogs the homes they deserve.
"K9 Focus is now in its fourth year and we have re-homed well over 200 dogs thanks to local kind hearted people who have taken our dogs into their homes and their hearts. There is nothing  more worthwhile than saying goodbye to a wagging tale on their way to their own forever home."
