Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City ready for huge Devon derby

The 60th Football League meeting between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City at a packed Home Park tomorrow (1pm) promises to be one of the most important ever between the Devon rivals.

So much will be at stake for both teams, but for very different reasons.

Argyle, for the second consecutive season, are fighting desperately to escape relegation from the Football League.

At the other end of the table, Exeter are in a play-off position and could even push for automatic promotion with a strong finish to the campaign.

Argyle are expecting a season-high, all-ticket attendance of around 13,000-14,000 at Home Park for the crucial clash and manager John Sheridan said: "I know the importance of the game. It's massive. It can give us a real lift if we can win it, going into the last six games.

"It would be great to give something back to the fans, as well, because it's against their local rivals. But, at the end of the day, it's the three points that I'm after."

Sheridan continued: "These are the games you want to be playing in, so I would really be looking forward to it.

"I wouldn't be worrying about it because there is going to be a big crowd. I would be thinking 'what a great game to play in'. That's what I want my players to do."

It will be Sheridan's first taste of a Devon derby between Argyle and Exeter, following his appointment as manager in January.

Less than a month earlier, the teams had drawn 1-1 at St James' Park.

Sheridan is no stranger to intense local rivalry, however, most notably from his time as a midfielder at Sheffield Wednesday.

They famously beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-finals in April 1993, before losing to Arsenal in the final after a replay.

Sheridan said: "That was probably the best derby I played in.

"It doesn't matter if there is 6,000 there or 50,000. A derby is a derby. With it being my first Devon derby, I would love to get off to a winning start."

Exeter have won 11 away games in League two this season, which equals the best total in the division with leaders Gillingham and second-placed Port Vale, so the visit to Home Park will hold no fears for them.

Argyle, however, have won three and drawn two of their last six games, with the only defeat coming at Gillingham on March 9, when they lost 2-1.

Sheridan said: "Exeter are a good footballing side and I don't think they will change because it has been successful for them so far in the season.

"We have just got to play like we have been playing. We have been a threat and we have defended well.

"I have been really pleased with the last five or six games. We have got a better shape to us."

He added: "I want us to be positive and take the game to Exeter. We are at home.

"I know the fans are going to get behind us anyway, but from the first whistle we have got to get on the front foot and give them something to cheer about. If we do that, we will be in the game."

While Argyle are in action tomorrow, many of their relegation rivals are playing today.

Barnet (20th) host Dagenham and Redbridge (17th), bottom-of-the-table Aldershot Town travel to 18th-placed Rochdale and Accrington Stanley (22nd) are away to Wycombe Wanderers.

All three of those matches take place this afternoon, while Torquay United (19th) visit Northampton Town tonight. The results in those matches will have an impact on the bottom of the table before Argyle take on Exeter and York City (23rd) travel to Bristol Rovers.
