An international animal charity is warning pet owners to take extra care and be on the look out for pet thieves.
A representative of four-paws.org.uk has warned Express and Echo readers of a recent increase in the theft of animals, particularly dogs.
He said:
"Sadly, dogs, horses, parrots and cats are at a high risk of being stolen because of their value.
"Some thieves blackmail owners, asking for a large sum of money in exchange for the safe return of their pet.
"This is completely shocking and upsetting, however pop to the shops and you will still see dogs that have been tied up outside while their owner is shopping, which is very dangerous and can be stressful to the animal."
The waring comes on the same day as a 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft in connection with the disappearance of a Siberian Husky puppy in Bude, Cornwall
Six-month-old Ash went missing from Crooklets car park on 22 March. She was recovered by police in St Austell on Tuesday 26 March.
Owners are being asked to try avoid leaving their animals outside shops, to reduce the amount of thefts.
A Bristol animal sanctuary has also warned pet owners to be vigilant after receiving a number of reports of stolen dogs in the city.
Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary in Barrow Gurney says it has been inundated recently with people who have been victims of dog theft.
A sanctuary spokeswoman said they may be being bred or used for fighting.
Animals are reported as going missing from secure kennels, outside shops and from owner's gardens.
"Pets should also be micro-chipped and owners should make sure all micro-chip records are up-to-date; although this will not prevent theft, it will help owners to get their pet back, hopefully unharmed." Will Wright, of Four Paws Charity, said.
"Owners also need to be careful when going on long walks, and be wary of letting their dogs have too much free run.
"Pets are part of the family, and losing any family member is heart-breaking, so let's do all we can to protect them."
