A Devon council responded to emergency flood calls by hand-filling 4,500 sandbags with 70 tons of sand. More than 250 requests for assistance were received by Mid Devon District Council recently, as well as 90 out-of-hours calls, it said. Workers regularly checked and cleared water courses and grids to relieve flooding and helped when 13 homes were left under two feet of water in Rivermead, Cullompton. Paul Williams, emergency planning officer, said: "We missed some waste and recycling collections because we could not get refuse vehicles through to some areas but waste will be collected on the next scheduled collection day."
