Christopher Sweetland, 38, of Powell Close, Seaton, was committed to prison for 26 weeks after being found guilty of assaulting a woman on New Year's Day as well as damaging a Nokia mobile phone belonging to the assault victim on January 30 and resisting a constable in the execution of his duty on the same date.
He had pleaded guilty to the criminal damage and resisting a constable offences.
Magistrates said the assault offence was serious because the victin was vulnerable, the defendant had a knife with him, he has previous convictions for similar incidents, the incident was protracted, and "he has no insight whatsoever into the effect of his behaviour on other people and is deliberately dragging the victim through the court for sport".
A restraining order was issued which will prevent him from contacting his victim by any means until further notice.
