It always fascinates me when supporters talk about goals of the season and, this week, Mitre are asking fans of all clubs to vote for their favourite goal of 2012 on official club websites.
From January until May, there was not much to get excited about at Exeter City, as the club slipped out of npower League One. But their fall from grace did not go without the odd bit of quality.
Much of that was to do with Alan Gow, who joined the club towards the end of that fateful season. "Gowser" certainly has an eye for the spectacular and chipped in with one or two contenders of his own.
Who could forget a stunning half-volley against Sheffield United on the final day of the 2011-12 season? Or his exquisite chip in the win over Walsall? They were down to individual brilliance, though, and City scored their fair share of superb team goals as well, such as Liam Sercombe's in the defeat at Rochdale.
However, after much deliberation, a shortlist of five was drawn up from which supporters can choose for their personal favourite.
As always with things like this, not everyone will agree and the five chosen would not all make my personal shortlist. But one that would was David Noble's stunning free-kick against Sheffield Wednesday.
As someone who hates the press box at St James' Park, I sit in the seats just in front and I remember vividly the audible groan when Noble struck the ball goalwards. To this day, I swear it was destined for St James' Road, but at the last minute, the ball dipped, clipped an upright and ended up in the net. It was a brilliant free-kick.
Also on the list is Jamie Cureton's first at Oxford, an incisive break from halfway which finished with the veteran striker drilling the ball into the top corner from 18 yards.
Danny Coles' cheeky backheel in the 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers this season is also on the list along with Cureton's winner in the 1-0 win at Bradford City.
However, the winner for me and the fifth contender in the "official" list was Gow's goal at Accrington Stanley. Every now and then, a player will do something that is beyond the realms of League Two level. That was the case at Accrington.
On a miserable, drizzly, grey day and in front of only 1,149 spectators, the Grecians turned in a dominant performance to win 3-0 and Gow's second goal that day was barely described any better than a neat finish from an acute angle.
But when you watch the goal back, you really see what Gow did. He tricked his way past two defenders and led a merry dance along the goal-line before cutting back infield. Then, he wrapped his left foot around his right leg and produced a 'rabona' to knock the ball into the opposite corner. It left the travelling Exeter fans open mouthed in amazement and his team-mates too.
Gow, though, had disappointed himself, believing that he looked like an idiot as he lost his balance after scoring and had fallen to the floor.
He was quickly assured by his team-mates that he had not and it did not take long for Sky Sports' Soccer AM programme to pick up on it and finish the following week's show-boating sequence with a slow-motion clip of the goal.
Had it been scored in the Premier League, it would have been goal of the season, let alone goal of the week or month.
It was pure class from an undoubtedly gifted player and easily my goal of 2012.
